West Bengal Launches Crackdown on Alleged Illegal Immigrants; Holding Centres Set Up Across Districts

As part of the ongoing initiative, authorities have established multiple “holding centres” across several districts. These facilities function in a manner similar to detention centres and are designed to temporarily accommodate individuals suspected of being illegal immigrants while their identity verification and legal procedures are completed. Officials state that the objective of the exercise is to strengthen border security and address longstanding concerns regarding infiltration.

Reports indicate that several individuals, including suspected Bangladeshi nationals, have already been transferred to these holding centres in districts such as Malda and Murshidabad. One such facility located in the English Bazar area of Malda is currently housing multiple detainees, including women and minors, who are reportedly under continuous surveillance.

Security arrangements at these centres have been significantly reinforced, with the installation of closed-circuit television cameras and the deployment of police personnel along with civil defence volunteers. Authorities have emphasized that individuals identified as foreign nationals lacking valid documentation will be processed strictly in accordance with established government guidelines.

Under the stated procedure, suspected individuals may be held for up to 30 days for verification of identity and legal status. Those confirmed to be residing illegally are expected to face deportation proceedings as part of the administrative process.

The issue has also triggered intense political debate across the state, with leaders delivering strong statements during public rallies and campaign events, calling for stringent action against alleged infiltration. At the same time, officials have underlined the necessity of maintaining law and order while ensuring that all actions remain within the framework of due legal process.
