Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Meets Prime Minister Narendra Modi in First Official Delhi Visit After Historic Electoral Victory

During the meeting, Chief Minister Vijay submitted a formal memorandum outlining key state concerns. The memorandum included opposition to Karnataka’s proposed Mekedatu reservoir project, a demand for the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen detained in Sri Lanka, and a proposal for establishing a Defence Research and Development Organisation center in the state.

This visit comes after Vijay’s party secured 108 seats in the April 23, 2026 elections, leading to his assumption of office on May 10. The electoral outcome ended decades of alternating dominance between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in Tamil Nadu politics, marking a significant political transition in the state.

Following the meeting with the Prime Minister, Chief Minister Vijay is scheduled to hold discussions with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. These meetings are expected to focus on requests for financial assistance, Goods and Services Tax compensation, and infrastructure funding support, particularly in the context of the state’s mounting debt challenges.

The series of high-level engagements underscores Tamil Nadu’s renewed push to assert its developmental and strategic priorities at the national level under its new leadership.
