Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Urges Prime Minister Modi to Halt Karnataka’s Mekedatu Dam Project Amid Cauvery Dispute
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay urges Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop Karnataka’s Mekedatu reservoir project, citing violation of Cauvery Tribunal and Supreme Court water-sharing rulings. The dispute involves 404.25 TMC allocation to Tamil Nadu and 284.75 TMC to Karnataka amid rising inter-state tensions.
According to the tribunal and court directives, Tamil Nadu has been allocated 404.25 TMC of Cauvery water, while Karnataka has been assigned 284.75 TMC. Vijay argued that any unilateral move by Karnataka to advance the Mekedatu project undermines the established legal framework governing river water distribution between the two states.
Karnataka, however, has maintained that the Mekedatu project is intended solely to utilize its lawful share of Cauvery water for Bengaluru’s drinking water supply and hydroelectric power generation. Despite this position, Vijay has called for the outright rejection of Karnataka’s project report, asserting that the proposal violates the spirit and intent of the judicial water-sharing arrangement.
The issue was also raised by Vijay during his meetings in Delhi with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, highlighting the seriousness of the dispute at the highest levels of the central government.
The renewed confrontation underscores persistent tensions between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka over Cauvery river waters, reflecting a long-standing and sensitive inter-state dispute with significant legal and administrative implications.
