PM Narendra Modi Sends Eid al-Adha Greetings to Bangladesh Amid Border Tensions and Diplomatic Strains
Prime Minister Narendra Modi sends Eid al-Adha greetings to Bangladeshi counterpart Tarique Rahman amid rising India-Bangladesh border tensions, illegal infiltration concerns, and river water disputes. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka releases the official letter as diplomatic outreach continues alongside intensified border verification and repatriation discussions.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka shared a formal letter written by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The communication was released at a time when Eid al-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice, is being observed in Bangladesh.
In his message, Prime Minister Modi stated that the sacred festival forms an integral part of India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage and is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm by millions of people of the Islamic faith across the country. He added that Eid al-Adha upholds timeless values of sacrifice, compassion, and brotherhood, which are essential for fostering a peaceful and inclusive world.
The Prime Minister further emphasized strengthening bilateral relations between India and Bangladesh, expressing India’s commitment to working with the Government of Bangladesh to enhance people-centric cooperation across multiple sectors. He also extended good health wishes to Tarique Rahman and conveyed hopes for continued progress and prosperity for the people of Bangladesh.
This gesture of “letter diplomacy” comes at a time when tensions have intensified along the India-Bangladesh border. Reports indicate increased activity related to illegal infiltrators, with a new state government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal announcing measures against unauthorized infiltration. Following these developments, a large number of Bangladeshi nationals have gathered at border check posts.
At the Hakimpur check post, located approximately 75 kilometers from Kolkata, Bangladeshi citizens have arrived carrying their identity documents. Their presence reflects growing concern and uncertainty regarding border movement and repatriation processes. Officials at the site are verifying documents in coordination with the Border Guard Bangladesh to confirm citizenship before initiating repatriation procedures.
Bangladesh has expressed concern over alleged pushbacks of illegal infiltrators, warning that it would take action if individuals are forcibly pushed across the border. However, Bangladesh’s Ministry of Home Affairs has also described the verification of identity documents as an internal matter of India, reflecting a complex and dual stance on the issue.
The exchange of diplomatic messages alongside heightened border sensitivities highlights the fragile balance in India-Bangladesh relations, where symbolic gestures of goodwill coexist with ongoing administrative and security challenges.
