West Bengal Political Turmoil Deepens as Defection Claims Trigger Fresh Controversy Between BJP and TMC
Political tension escalates in West Bengal as BJP MP Saumitra Khan claims over 50 MLAs and 20 MPs may defect to BJP if approved by central leadership. TMC dismisses allegations as baseless. The dispute highlights anti-defection law implications and deepening rivalry between BJP and TMC amid shifting political equations in the state.
Khan asserted that if the central leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party grants consent, the Trinamool Congress would effectively cease to exist as a political organisation. He stated that approximately fifty legislators are dissatisfied within the party, while around twenty Members of Parliament are willing to join the Bharatiya Janata Party fold.
Escalating his attack on Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee, Khan referred to him in strong terms, alleging that he should be imprisoned. He further claimed that a bulldozer was stationed outside Banerjee’s residence, linking it to past incidents in which Bharatiya Janata Party workers’ homes were demolished during 2021. Khan said that individuals responsible for such actions should face immediate consequences.
In response, senior Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Sougata Roy dismissed the allegations, describing them as entirely baseless. He stated that the claims being circulated by the Bharatiya Janata Party and Saumitra Khan were unfounded and would not materialise.
The controversy also brings attention to the provisions of the anti-defection law, under which at least two-thirds of the members of a parliamentary party must switch allegiance together to avoid disqualification. In the case of the Trinamool Congress, which holds twenty-nine Members of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, the required threshold would be approximately nineteen to twenty members.
Political realignments in West Bengal have seen significant shifts in recent years. Prior to the 2021 assembly elections, several prominent Trinamool Congress leaders had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party but later returned after the Mamata Banerjee-led party retained power. However, current political equations appear more volatile, with the Bharatiya Janata Party now holding power in West Bengal after ending the Trinamool Congress’s fifteen-year governance.
The unfolding claims and counterclaims have intensified political uncertainty, underscoring the fragile balance of party strength in both the state and national political landscape.
