India-Norway Elevate Bilateral Ties to Green Strategic Partnership During Prime Minister Modi’s Oslo Visit
Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Oslo marked a major breakthrough in India-Norway relations as both countries elevated ties to a Green Strategic Partnership. The new framework will strengthen cooperation in climate action, renewable energy, resilient supply chains, green technologies and the blue economy, while also advancing broader discussions on India’s engagement with Nordic nations and Europe.
The announcement was made during Prime Minister Modi’s official visit to Oslo, where the two leaders held extensive discussions on strengthening cooperation across critical sectors. Addressing reporters after the Prime Minister’s engagements in the Norwegian capital, Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West) Sibi George described the new framework as a significant milestone in India-Norway ties.
According to Mr. George, the Green Strategic Partnership will add a strategic dimension to bilateral relations and expand collaboration in climate action, renewable energy, resilient supply chains, green technologies and the blue economy. The initiative is expected to deepen engagement in sectors that are central to both countries’ long-term economic and environmental priorities.
During the joint appearance in Oslo, Prime Minister Støre acknowledged that India and Norway may have differences on certain issues, but stressed that both nations must stand together against countries that “weaponise” diplomacy, trade and technology. His remarks highlighted a shared concern over the misuse of international economic and political tools and reflected a broader commitment to protecting open and rules-based global cooperation.
The elevation of ties comes at a time when India is intensifying partnerships with countries that are leaders in sustainability, innovation and maritime development. Norway’s expertise in renewable energy, green shipping and ocean-based industries aligns closely with India’s ambitions to accelerate its clean energy transition and strengthen resilient supply chains.
Prime Minister Modi will continue his diplomatic engagements on Tuesday by participating in the Nordic India Summit, where he is scheduled to meet leaders from Denmark, Sweden and Finland. Discussions at the summit are expected to revisit the proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement, a key issue in India’s expanding economic engagement with Europe.
The decision to elevate India-Norway relations to a Green Strategic Partnership signals a decisive shift toward a more comprehensive and future-oriented alliance. By combining strategic cooperation with a strong focus on climate action, renewable energy and technological resilience, both countries have laid the foundation for a partnership that is expected to play an increasingly important role in shaping sustainable growth and international cooperation.
