US "Air Armada" Rescues F-15E Crew from Deep Inside Iran in "Unblinking" 46-Hour Mission
The US military deployed a 176-aircraft "air armada" to rescue two F-15E Strike Eagle crew members downed deep inside Iran. President Donald Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth detailed the 46-hour "unblinking" mission involving A-10 Warthogs and elite troops to extract the pilot and weapon systems officer from enemy territory following a "lucky hit" by Iranian forces.
General Caine detailed the composition of the rescue fleet, which included bombers, fighters, refueling tankers, helicopters, and unmanned systems. Specifically identifying the A-10 Warthog, the H-60 Jolly Green II, and the HC-130 Combat King II, Caine also indicated the essential use of remotely piloted and tactical drones. He emphasized that the courage demonstrated by the isolated airmen while evading the enemy cannot be overstated. President Trump explained that the extraction of the airmen was specifically challenging, demanding 155 aircraft to confuse and misdirect Iranian forces on the hunt. By utilizing seven locations with only one being legitimate, American forces descended on the real area, engaged the enemy, rescued the stranded officer, destroyed all threats, and exited Iranian territory.
The F-15E Strike Eagle marks the first manned American aircraft downed by Iran since the war began on February 28, an event Trump dismissed as a "lucky hit" by the enemy. While US forces previously acknowledged losing three Strike Eagles in a friendly fire incident with a Kuwaiti F/A-18 Hornet, they have also lost more than a dozen MQ-9 Reapers, an E-3 Sentry in an Iranian attack on a base in Saudi Arabia, and a KC-135 Stratotanker in a crash over Iraq. This "unblinking" extraction stands as a testament to the immense scale of American military persistence and the high-stakes nature of the ongoing conflict.
