CHANDIGARH: In a decisive move to fortify its commitment to academic excellence, industry engagement, and professional development, Chandigarh University (CU) has inaugurated the Student Chapter of the Institution of Engineers India (IEI). As the largest multidisciplinary professional society of engineers established in 1920, the IEI Student Chapter at CU is designed to nurture innovation, research, and professional excellence among engineering students by enhancing technical knowledge and connecting them with industry experts through workshops, seminars, conferences, and hands-on training programmes. This strategic initiative, organized by the Department of Computer Science & Engineering, University Institute of Engineering (UIE), aims to bridge the gap between theoretical academia and practical industrial application.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by a distinguished assembly of academic and industry leaders, including Chief Guest Dr. Labh Singh, former Chairman of IEI Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre; Guests of Honour Karnail Singh, Secretary of IEI Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre; and Dr. Arvind Dhingra, former Chairman and Ex-Council Member of IEI Ludhiana Centre. Representing Chandigarh University were Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) Raviraja N Seetharam, Pro-VC (Academics) Prof (Dr) Raghuveer VR, and Advisor to the Chancellor Prof (Dr) RS Bawa.

During his inaugural address, Dr. Labh Singh emphasized that modern engineering is about shaping society, solving real-world problems, and creating a sustainable future. He noted that India stands at a crucial juncture of digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and the Industry 4.0 revolution, with young engineers at the epicenter of this change. Dr. Singh highlighted that the IEI covers 15 different engineering branches and that the new chapter will provide students with grants and funds for technical development, certification, and research. He further asserted that the initiative promotes "equitable development" by supporting equal opportunities and greater participation of women in engineering, fully aligning with the visions of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Skill India.

Prof (Dr) Raviraja N Seetharam expressed pride in Chandigarh University joining the ranks of over 1,700 IEI Student Chapters in India. He highlighted CU's status as India's number one private university for three consecutive years according to QS World University Rankings. He noted that while five disciplines were featured in 2025, 11 disciplines have now secured places in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. Specifically, three engineering subjects, including Computer Science and Information System, are ranked among the top 300 globally, placing CU within the top 1% of universities worldwide. He stated the IEI chapter offers a golden opportunity for students to hone talents through networking and grant access.
