Mumbai to Launch Groundbreaking Pod Taxi Project in BKC, Marking Major Leap in Smart Urban Mobility

Mumbai to launch ₹1017 crore Pod Taxi project in BKC with autonomous transport system aimed at improving last-mile connectivity, reducing congestion, and enhancing urban mobility. The project aligns Mumbai with global smart cities like London and Dubai.

Mumbai is all set to witness a groundbreaking ceremony for the Pod Taxi project during a function at Chembur on Tuesday (April 7, 2026), marking a significant milestone in the city’s transition towards advanced urban mobility solutions.

This advanced, autonomous transportation system seeks to bridge last-mile gaps by providing smooth, direct connections between major transit hubs and important business areas. The initiative represents a major advancement in Mumbai’s transformation into a smart city, aligning its urban mobility framework with global technology-driven centres such as London and Dubai.

Pod Taxis, also known as Automated Rapid Transit Systems, are driverless transport systems designed to deliver seamless point-to-point connectivity. Operating autonomously, these systems transport passengers at high frequencies, ensuring minimal waiting times and efficient transit.

Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, stated that the Pod Taxi project in Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) marks a significant step towards enhancing urban mobility in one of Mumbai’s busiest business districts. He emphasized that the system will improve last-mile connectivity, reduce congestion, and provide a modern and efficient mode of transportation for daily commuters.

The project has received approval with an estimated budget of approximately ₹1017 crore and will be executed through a public-private partnership model. It is a collaboration between Sai Green Mobility Private Limited and Ultra PRT, a technology provider with a proven track record, including the operational Pod Taxi system at Heathrow Airport.

The project is expected to transform daily commuting for an estimated four to six lakh commuters traveling to BKC. With the anticipated surge in footfall driven by major infrastructure developments such as the bullet train and new commercial buildings, efficient last-mile connectivity has become crucial. The Pod Taxi system was strategically selected for BKC following a comprehensive Techno-Economic Feasibility Study (TEFS), which evaluated global technologies and identified Pod Taxi as the most suitable solution for the region’s requirements.

The initiative aims to reduce reliance on auto rickshaws, taxis, and buses for short-distance travel between stations and office hubs in BKC, an area characterized by high daily travel demand and limited road space.

The fare for the Pod Taxi system has been competitively set at ₹21 per km, based on surveys indicating that a significant majority of current auto and bus users are willing to pay this amount for a more efficient transit option. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority will formally notify the rates during the conditions precedent phase of the project. The fare is expected to increase annually by 4 percent to accommodate inflation and operational costs.

As Mumbai prepares to launch this ambitious initiative, the Pod Taxi project stands as a defining step towards reshaping urban commuting, promising efficiency, reduced congestion, and a technologically advanced future for one of India’s most dynamic cities.
