Fadnavis Links Madurai Metro Approval to BJP Candidate’s Win, Sparks Political Row

Devendra Fadnavis links Madurai Metro approval to BJP candidate’s win, triggering sharp criticism from CM M.K. Stalin over “bargaining and blackmail.” The rejected 2025 project resurfaces as a key political flashpoint ahead of assembly elections, raising questions on governance and development.

A sharp political controversy has emerged after Devendra Fadnavis linked the approval of the Madurai Metro project to the electoral victory of a BJP candidate, intensifying tensions ahead of the assembly elections.

Fadnavis made the remark on April 6 while supporting Prof. Raama Sreenivasan for Madurai South, telling reporters that the project would reach Narendra Modi once Sreenivasan wins. The statement immediately drew strong criticism from Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, who condemned it as “bargaining and blackmail,” highlighting delays by the central government despite the state’s growth.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of the Madur

ai Metro proposal being rejected in November 2025. The rejection was based on population criteria derived from the 2011 census, along with financial concerns cited by authorities. The issue has since remained a point of contention, now gaining renewed political significance as election campaigning intensifies.
