Maharashtra Weather Update: Thunderstorms, Heavy Rain Alert for Vidarbha Today

Maharashtra Weather Update: Chandrapur and Gadchiroli face heavy rain today, while several Marathwada and Vidarbha districts may see thunderstorms, lightning and light rain under a favourable weather system.

Rain-friendly weather conditions have developed across Maharashtra, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in Marathwada and Vidarbha today, September 11. A yellow alert has been issued for Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts, where heavy rainfall is expected. Light rain accompanied by lightning is likely in other parts of the state.

A low-pressure area has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal, with a cyclonic circulation extending up to 9.4 kilometres above mean sea level over and adjoining the system. The monsoon trough, extending from Jammu through Dehradun, Fatehgarh, Prayagraj, Ambikapur and Jharsuguda to the centre of the low-pressure area and further into the east-central Bay of Bengal, was also present.

A low-pressure trough from Rayalaseema to the Gulf of Mannar continues to persist. Cyclonic winds are prevailing over Saurashtra and adjoining areas at an altitude of 4.5 to 5.8 kilometres. A cyclonic circulation is also prevailing over Haryana and adjoining areas at 3.1 kilometres above mean sea level, with a low-pressure trough extending from this system towards the low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal.

During the 24 hours ending Thursday, September 10 morning, Chandrapur recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 36 degrees Celsius. Mahabaleshwar and Yavatmal recorded the lowest temperature at 17 degrees Celsius.

In the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am, Raver in Jalgaon district recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 50 millimetres. Rainfall remained subdued across the rest of Maharashtra, with light showers occurring amid alternating sunshine and cloudy conditions. A rise in maximum temperatures has also resulted in increased heat and humidity.

As weather conditions remain favourable for rainfall, heavy rain is expected in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts of Vidarbha today. A yellow alert has also been issued for the Nashik ghat areas, as well as Parbhani, Hingoli and Nanded in Marathwada and Yavatmal, Wardha, Nagpur, Bhandara and Gondia in Vidarbha, where thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are likely.

In the remaining parts of Maharashtra, the weather is expected to remain cloudy, with light rainfall and lightning possible amid alternating sunshine and cloud cover. The forecast indicates that rain activity is likely to remain concentrated over the warned districts while other areas may continue to experience light showers.
