Additional Municipal Commissioner (City) Prajakta Verma-Lavangare has directed civic hospitals to provide free treatment to injured Govindas and remain fully prepared throughout the festival.
The BMC has instructed the deans, chief medical superintendents and medical superintendents of its hospitals to ensure that medical teams and facilities remain ready to treat injured Govindas. Special arrangements have been made at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital in Sion, KEM Hospital in Parel and Nair Hospital in Mumbai Central.
The civic body has also kept 105 beds ready across 16 suburban hospitals, with each hospital having between five and 10 beds available for injured participants.
Under the arrangements, Govindas suffering minor injuries will receive first aid and may be discharged after treatment, as per the prescribed procedure. Those suffering serious injuries or requiring longer-term treatment will also be provided with the necessary medical care at civic hospitals.
To support the arrangements, medical officers and staff have been deployed in three shifts.
The BMC has instructed its hospitals to maintain adequate stocks of medicines, injections, surgical materials and plaster of Paris (POP). X-ray and other medical equipment have also been kept operational to deal with injuries that may occur during Dahi Handi celebrations.
The civic administration has instructed doctors and hospital staff to remain alert throughout the festival period.
The arrangements have been made considering the large number of Govinda groups that participate in Dahi Handi celebrations across Mumbai and the wider metropolitan region.
The BMC said the preparedness is aimed at ensuring that injured participants receive timely medical attention and that emergencies can be handled without delay.
“The preparations are aimed at ensuring that any injuries during the festival are treated quickly and that emergency medical services remain available throughout the celebrations,” the civic officials said.
