Janmashtami 2026: Is the Indian Stock Market Closed on September 4?

Janmashtami 2026 falls on September 4, but the NSE and BSE will remain open. Find out whether trading and settlement are affected and when the next full stock market holiday will occur.

With Krishna Janmashtami being observed on Friday, September 4, investors may be wondering whether the festival has triggered a trading holiday for the Indian stock market. However, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) will remain open for regular trading on September 4.

Investors can buy and sell shares and trade equity derivatives during normal market hours, as Janmashtami is not listed as a trading holiday in the 2026 market calendar.

There will also be no settlement holiday for the stock market on September 4. Trading, along with the associated clearing and settlement processes, will follow the regular schedule.

The distinction between a trading holiday and a settlement holiday is important. A trading holiday means the stock exchanges remain closed, while a settlement holiday allows trading to continue but pauses the clearing and settlement of eligible trades. Neither applies to the NSE and BSE on Janmashtami this year.

The festival does, however, coincide with bank holidays in several states, with closures varying by region.

The next full trading holiday for the Indian stock market is September 14, 2026, for Ganesh Chaturthi. Until then, trading and settlement activities will continue according to the regular market schedule.
