Arunachal Pradesh’s Glaw Lake Declared India’s 101st Ramsar Site for Conservation

Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh has been designated as India’s 101st Ramsar Site by Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav. The freshwater lake in the Eastern Himalayas marks the state’s first Ramsar recognition and boosts wetland conservation efforts.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav has announced the designation of Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh as India’s 101st Ramsar Site, marking a significant development in wetland conservation efforts.

In a social media post, Bhupender Yadav described the recognition as an important step towards biodiversity conservation, water and climate security, and sustainable livelihoods. He said the pristine freshwater lake located in the Eastern Himalayas is a biodiversity hotspot, nestled within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary.

The Minister said Glaw Lake is surrounded by lush vegetation, with more than 150 tree species and 49 orchid species recorded within the site and its catchment area. He highlighted the designation as a significant milestone as Arunachal Pradesh receives its first Ramsar Site.

Bhupender Yadav said India has emerged as a global leader in wetland conservation. He noted that the country’s Ramsar Sites have increased from 26 in 2014 to 101 today, reflecting the Government’s commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development.
