Roca Expands Ohtake Collection in India With Rodrigo Ohtake’s New Basins

Roca launches the expanded Ohtake Collection in India with new basin designs by Rodrigo Ohtake, extending Ruy Ohtake’s legacy through sculptural forms, Fineceramic® technology, and award-winning bathroom design innovation.

Roca, the global leader in bathroom solutions, has announced the Indian launch of an expanded Ohtake Collection, introducing new basin designs by architect and designer Rodrigo Ohtake. The enhanced collection builds on the original range created by the late legendary Brazilian architect Ruy Ohtake, bringing together organic forms, artistic expression, and advanced material innovation for contemporary bathrooms.

The Ohtake Collection draws inspiration from the organic shapes found in the Brazilian landscape. For Ruy Ohtake, nature was not simply a visual reference but a design language. Curving surfaces, rounded forms, and flowing edges became defining elements of his work, reflecting his ambition to create designs that engage the senses and move beyond basic functionality.

While developing the original collection, Ruy Ohtake found inspiration in the egg, admiring its remarkable structural strength achieved through a delicate form. Connecting the lightness of an eggshell with Roca’s proprietary Fineceramic® material, he used advanced technology to create the ultra-thin borders that define the collection’s sculptural identity.

The resulting pieces, featuring sensual undulating edges and distinctive outlines, evoke a shoreline experience rather than a conventional basin design. Ruy Ohtake described the importance of emotional connection in architecture and design, stating: “A good piece of Architecture, of design, must have an element of unpredictability, of emotion.”

The original collection later received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award 2019 for its integration of technology, functionality, and aesthetics in a symbiotic way.

Following the passing of Ruy Ohtake in November 2021, his son Rodrigo Ohtake has led the OHTAKE office, a multidisciplinary studio working across architecture, design, urbanism, and material innovation. Rodrigo continues to draw inspiration from the Brazilian landscape, including its colours, forms, and atmosphere. “Living with Art and Nature makes life gentler, softer,” he observes.

Raised among his father’s architectural practice and the celebrated abstract works of his grandmother, pioneering Asian-Brazilian artist Tomie Ohtake, Rodrigo Ohtake has carried forward a family tradition shaped by art and design. His contribution to the Ohtake Collection for Roca combines contemporary design ideas with the creative legacy of his family.

For his first contribution to the Ohtake Collection, Rodrigo Ohtake developed new basin designs focused on interaction and engagement. Building on Ruy Ohtake’s signature curves, he created softer, more open forms that extend the basin silhouette like a cupped hand collecting water.

The inspiration behind the two new over-countertop basins is the calla lily flower, with its delicate unfolding shape translated into refined ceramic geometry. Rodrigo developed the designs through a hands-on process, creating miniature dough maquettes to achieve the desired proportions, a method similar to the artistic approach of his grandmother Tomie Ohtake.

The new basins are available in three finishes: White, Matt Black, and a new Terracotta finish. The Terracotta tone reflects the ochre soils and sun-baked clay of the Brazilian interior. Rodrigo Ohtake’s designs received recognition for their originality with the “Best in Show” award at the 2023 Expo Revestir, the annual design event in São Paulo.

All Ohtake basins are manufactured using Roca’s proprietary Fineceramic® material, which enables ultra-thin walls and precisely tapered edges that are central to the collection’s sculptural character. Fineceramic® provides durability, scratch resistance, and a refined surface quality designed to maintain the elegance of each piece through years of daily use.

The expanded Ohtake Collection is available in India and includes the Over-countertop Fineceramic® Basin, 625 × 385 mm (RS327A1P..0), available in White, Stone, Matt Black, and Terracotta; the Over-countertop Fineceramic® Basin, 550 × 385 mm (RS327A13..0), a refined mid-size option available in White, Beige, and Matt Black; and the Over-countertop Fineceramic® Basin, Ø380 mm (RS327A15..0), available in White, beige, and Matt Black.

All basins are available in the following finishes: 00 White | 07 Stone | 65 Beige | 08 Matt Black | TC Terracotta (selected models).
