Tamil Nadu CM Vijay to Provide Government Jobs to Families of Karur Stampede Victims
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay will distribute compassionate appointment orders to 32 eligible family members of victims of the Karur stampede, which killed at least 41 people and injured more than 100 during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally in Velusamypuram on September 27, 2025. The move follows financial assistance of ₹20 lakh provided to each deceased family, while a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the incident continues.
The crowd crush occurred on September 27, 2025, during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam rally at Velusamypuram, where a massive surge of people toward Vijay’s delayed convoy resulted in the deaths of several attendees, including children. More than 100 people were injured in the incident.
Vijay will provide appointment orders to 32 eligible family members for positions in departments including municipal administration and revenue. The move follows the financial assistance of ₹20 lakh provided by him to each deceased family shortly after the tragedy.
During his visit, Vijay will also lay the foundation stone for a ₹1,700 crore footwear manufacturing plant, which is expected to generate employment opportunities for 13,500 people.
The compassionate appointments have faced criticism over concerns that they bypass merit-based recruitment procedures. The development comes while the Central Bureau of Investigation continues its probe into the stampede incident.
The government employment assistance for the affected families marks a significant administrative response following one of Tamil Nadu’s major public gathering tragedies, while the ongoing investigation continues to examine the circumstances that led to the loss of lives.
