According to police officials, the operation was launched after intelligence inputs indicated that a group of suspicious individuals was waiting outside the airport premises for a specific passenger. Acting on the tip-off, police intensified surveillance around Karipur Airport at approximately 10 p.m. on Sunday and apprehended those allegedly involved in the conspiracy.
Investigators revealed that the suspects had allegedly planned to abduct a passenger identified as Subair, who was returning from abroad. The accused were reportedly preparing to intercept him after he exited the airport and rob him of gold and cash believed to be in his possession.
During the operation, police seized two cars and two motorcycles that were allegedly intended to be used in carrying out the planned crime.
Those arrested are residents of Kerala's Kannur, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts, as well as the Kodagu region of Karnataka. Examination of the suspects' mobile phones yielded several important leads. According to officials, data recovered from the devices suggests that additional individuals were involved in the conspiracy. Investigators believe some suspects fled the scene after detecting the presence of police personnel.
Police also discovered that the accused possessed photographs of Subair along with other information related to him, reinforcing suspicions that the operation had been carefully planned in advance. Authorities are simultaneously investigating whether the targeted passenger was carrying any smuggled gold.
Karipur Airport has witnessed similar incidents in the past, with passengers allegedly linked to gold smuggling becoming targets of robbery and kidnapping attempts. Police have registered a case under various sections, including criminal conspiracy to commit robbery, and have launched a detailed investigation. Procedures are also underway to produce the arrested suspects before a court and seek their custodial remand.
The case has once again highlighted persistent security concerns surrounding passengers suspected of carrying gold through Karipur Airport, while investigators continue efforts to identify and apprehend all individuals connected to the alleged conspiracy.
