Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu Inaugurates Multipurpose Sports Stadium in Shimla, Launches State’s First Anti-Drug Volleyball Tournament

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated the Rs. 3.18 crore Multipurpose Sports Stadium at Sanjauli in Shimla and launched Himachal Pradesh’s first Anti-Drug Awareness Volleyball Tournament. He announced Rs. 1 crore for ground development, a Primary Health Centre, and enhanced support for athletes across the state.

Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday inaugurated the newly constructed Multipurpose Sports Stadium at Sanjauli in Shimla, marking a significant step in strengthening sports infrastructure and promoting youth engagement in the state. Built at a cost of Rs. 3.18 crore, the facility includes an open sports ground, a hall, an open hall, a kitchen, and other essential amenities.

The Chief Minister also inaugurated Himachal Pradesh’s first Anti-Drug Awareness Volleyball Tournament at Sanjauli, organized as part of the International Summer Festival in Shimla. During the event, he unveiled the tournament’s running trophy and announced a cash prize of Rs. 1 lakh for the winning team.

In a ceremonial display, the Chief Minister took the salute during a march-past presented by 13 teams from across the state. He also administered an anti-drug abuse pledge to all participants. On the occasion, he announced Rs. 1 crore for the further improvement and development of the Sanjauli Ground. He also declared the establishment of a Primary Health Centre and announced the elevation of the Sanjauli Holi Fair to district-level status.

Addressing the gathering, Sukhu said the state government is actively pursuing efforts to host Khelo India competitions in Himachal Pradesh and that directions have already been issued to the concerned department. He stated that the government has increased prize money for winners of international sporting events and will soon introduce a policy to reward national-level sports achievers to further encourage sporting excellence in the state.

The Chief Minister further announced that a new stadium is being constructed at Ghatasani near Shimla at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crore. Recalling his school days, he said he regularly participated in sports competitions and therefore understands the challenges faced by athletes.

Highlighting measures taken for sportspersons, Sukhu said the government has increased dietary allowances for athletes. Participants competing within the state are now being provided Rs. 400 per day, while those representing the state outside Himachal Pradesh receive Rs. 500 per day. He added that air travel facilities are also being provided for journeys exceeding 200 kilometres.

MLA Harish Janartha said that the Sanjauli Ground is one of the oldest sports grounds in the area and that the long-standing demand for a high-quality sports facility has finally been fulfilled. He noted that encouraging young people to participate in sports and stay away from drug abuse reflects the Chief Minister’s vision. Janartha also stated that several other sports grounds are being developed in Shimla and extended his best wishes to all participating teams.

Mayor of the Municipal Corporation Shimla Surinder Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh, Director of Youth Services and Sports Shivam Pratap Singh, along with other dignitaries, were present at the event.

The inauguration of the Multipurpose Sports Stadium and the launch of the state’s first Anti-Drug Awareness Volleyball Tournament underline the government’s dual focus on strengthening sports infrastructure and mobilizing youth against substance abuse, while creating new opportunities for athletic development across Himachal Pradesh.
