MONSOON ADVANCES ACROSS PENINSULAR INDIA, HEAVY RAINFALL ALERT ISSUED FOR SEVERAL STATES

The southwest monsoon advanced into more parts of Maharashtra, Telangana, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and the Arabian Sea on Monday, maintaining near-normal progress despite a delayed onset in Kerala. The IMD has issued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall warnings for several states, while forecasts indicate further expansion across northern and western India in the coming days.

The southwest monsoon continued its advance across several parts of India on Monday, extending into more areas of the west-central and east-central Arabian Sea, Telangana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. The progress comes days after the monsoon reached Kerala on June 4, three days later than its normal onset date and five days after the forecast issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Despite the delayed arrival, the monsoon's overall advancement has remained nearly normal.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, ranging between 7 and 20 centimetres, across Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, the northeastern region, and sub-Himalayan West Bengal over the next seven days. The weather agency has also warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall in Karnataka and Kerala on June 8 and June 9.

In addition, a western disturbance is expected to influence weather conditions across parts of the country. The system is likely to trigger light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, gusty winds reaching speeds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour, and hailstorms on June 11.

According to Mahesh Palawat, Vice President for Climate and Meteorology at private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather, the monsoon is currently progressing at a healthy pace. He stated that the monsoon is expected to cover the entire northwest region of India, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, parts of central India, Jharkhand, and eastern Bihar within the next two to three days. He further indicated that the monsoon could reach southern Gujarat by June 16 or June 17, while pre-monsoon activity is expected to intensify across western and northwestern India.
