Indian High Commission in London Condemns Disruption of Chief Justice Surya Kant’s Lecture Amid Heated Q&A Exchange

The Indian High Commission in London has condemned the disruption of Chief Justice Surya Kant’s lecture at Birkbeck College during a heated Q&A session. The statement called the behaviour indecent and urged respectful discourse as questions on dissent and remarks sparked controversy and viral reactions online.

The Indian High Commission in London has strongly condemned the disruption of a lecture delivered by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant at Birkbeck College, London, describing the incident as unacceptable audience behaviour and calling for civility in public discourse. The controversy erupted during a high-profile academic event held on June 4, where the Chief Justice was invited to speak on “Artificial Intelligence and International Law.”

In an official statement, the High Commission characterised the heckling during the session as “indecorous audience behaviour” that was “unacceptable and inconsistent with respectful engagement.” It further stressed that differences of opinion must be expressed in a civil and respectful manner, particularly in academic and public forums involving constitutional authorities.

The lecture, delivered at Birkbeck College, proceeded with a focus on the expanding influence of artificial intelligence across governance systems, commerce, warfare, communication, public administration, and the exercise of judicial and sovereign power. The Chief Justice underscored that technological advancement must remain accountable to constitutional values, democratic legitimacy, and human dignity. He further warned that decisions taken in the current decade would significantly shape the evolving relationship between technology, power, freedom, and justice, presenting one of the most critical challenges for the development of modern international law.

Tensions emerged during the question-and-answer session when certain attendees raised concerns regarding alleged suppression of dissent in India and attempted to question the Chief Justice over his recent “cockroach” remark. A female attendee reportedly linked her question to concerns raised by legal observers, suggesting increasing hostility toward dissent within India and implying that such concerns were reflected in the Chief Justice’s remarks.

However, the session moderators intervened and curtailed the questions, stating that they fell outside the scope of the lecture topic. The moderators repeatedly clarified that the discussion was limited to artificial intelligence and international law, and the questioning was subsequently halted.

The incident, captured on video, quickly circulated widely on social media platforms, drawing significant attention and sparking debate over academic freedom, freedom of expression, and appropriate conduct in formal institutional settings. In response, the High Commission reiterated its condemnation of the disruption, reinforcing its call for respectful engagement even amid disagreement.
