K Annamalai Resigns from BJP, Cites Differences With Party Leadership Over Tamil Nadu Strategy
Former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai resigned from the party’s primary membership, citing differences with the leadership over Tamil Nadu’s political direction. His exit comes after being replaced by Nainar Nagenthran and amid the BJP’s renewed alliance with the AIADMK ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.
Annamalai’s departure follows weeks of speculation over his future within the party. He was reportedly dissatisfied after being replaced by Nainar Nagenthran as the Tamil Nadu BJP president and following the revival of the electoral alliance between the BJP and the AIADMK in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections.
During his visit to New Delhi, Annamalai met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday to discuss the issue. The meeting came amid growing indications of differences between the former state chief and the party’s central leadership regarding the political direction of the BJP in Tamil Nadu.
In his resignation letter, Annamalai referred to a series of discussions with the party’s top leadership and acknowledged longstanding disagreements over the state’s political strategy.
“At this point, I would recall the multiple conversations with the top leadership and the disagreements I have expressed over the last 18 months. I do not want to burden the top leadership any further with my ongoing thoughts on the way forward for a growth-oriented and culturally rooted politics in Tamil Nadu. After my conversations with our senior leadership, I have come to the conclusion that our views don't align regarding Tamil Nadu,” he stated.
Explaining his decision to leave the party, Annamalai said he intended to reassess the purpose that originally brought him into public life and determine his future political course.
“I believe the time has come for me to step out of the party, reflect on the actual purpose of my entering politics, and sail where the winds take me in the future. I humbly request that I be relieved of my organisational responsibilities with immediate effect, and that my resignation from the primary membership of the BJP be accepted with immediate effect,” he added.
Annamalai’s resignation represents a major setback for the BJP in Tamil Nadu, where he emerged as one of the party’s most visible leaders. His exit also underscores internal differences over the party’s political strategy in the state at a crucial time, as preparations intensify for the 2026 Assembly elections and the BJP seeks to strengthen its position through its renewed alliance with the AIADMK.
