Election Commission Announces June 18 Polls for Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council Seats Across States
The Election Commission of India has announced elections for 27 Rajya Sabha and state legislative council seats, with polling scheduled for June 18. The process includes biennial elections across 10 states, Rajya Sabha by-elections in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha, and legislative council elections in Bihar, with counting to take place on the same day.
According to the schedule released by the Election Commission on Monday, the nomination process commenced on June 1 at 11 a.m. Candidates can file their nominations until June 8, with scrutiny of nomination papers scheduled for June 9. The final date for withdrawal of candidatures has been fixed as June 11.
Polling for all the notified seats will be conducted on June 18 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The counting of votes will begin at 5 p.m. on the same day, immediately after the conclusion of polling.
The Election Commission stated that biennial elections will be conducted for 24 Rajya Sabha seats spread across 10 states. In addition, by-elections will be held for Rajya Sabha vacancies in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.
The Commission also announced elections for the Bihar Legislative Council, where biennial polls will be conducted for nine seats. Alongside these, a by-election will be held for one additional seat in the state legislative council.
The upcoming elections are a significant part of the constitutional process for filling vacancies and ensuring continued representation in the Upper House of Parliament and state legislative councils. The June 18 polls will determine the occupancy of key legislative positions across several states, making the electoral exercise an important event in the country's parliamentary and state-level political framework.
