The victim, a resident of Mumbai’s Vile Parle locality, lived with her family and studied at St. Xavier’s School. During her summer holidays, she had travelled to her ancestral village in Raigad district. According to police findings, the accused, Shubham Utekar, a married man from the same locality and previously known to the girl, had been monitoring her movements for an extended period. Investigators believe he deliberately waited for her arrival in the village before executing his plan.
On the night of the incident, the accused allegedly called the girl out of her residence around midnight under a false pretext. He then took her to a nearby forested area in Mangaon taluka, where she was brutally murdered. The following Wednesday morning, local residents discovered her severely mutilated body, triggering widespread panic and shock across the region.
Initial police response found no immediate leads, as the crime scene lacked visible direct evidence. However, a crucial breakthrough emerged when investigators traced the victim’s final phone activity. It was revealed that the girl had made her last call using her father’s mobile phone on the night of the crime. This detail became the key lead in the investigation.
Forensic teams and dog squads were deployed to the site, while technical surveillance units began analysing call detail records and mobile location data. These efforts gradually led investigators to identify inconsistencies that pointed toward the accused. Police stated that although Shubham Utekar had attempted to eliminate evidence and evade suspicion by returning to Mumbai shortly after the crime, digital tracking ultimately exposed his movements.
Acting swiftly on technical intelligence, police apprehended the accused from the Vile Parle area of Mumbai. During interrogation, once confronted with digital and circumstantial evidence, he reportedly confessed to the crime. Authorities noted that the accused had carefully planned the incident, ensuring no physical evidence was left behind, but failed to account for mobile location tracking and call records, which proved decisive in solving the case within 24 hours.
The investigation has raised serious concerns among residents in both urban and rural areas, highlighting how individuals within familiar social circles can pose unforeseen threats.
