DOC Film Bazaar Inaugurated at 18th Mumbai International Film Festival; Apoorva Bakshi Leads Opening Ceremony
The 18th Mumbai International Film Festival inaugurated the DOC Film Bazaar with Apoorva Bakshi leading the opening ceremony. The initiative introduces a dedicated platform for documentary filmmakers to connect with buyers, sponsors, and collaborators. Structured across co-production, work-in-progress, and viewing segments, the event aims to strengthen documentary filmmaking infrastructure and concludes on 21 June after six days of industry engagement and discussions on funding and monetization strategies.
Festival Director of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), Mumbai, Prithul Kumar, was also present at the inauguration, underscoring institutional support for the newly introduced platform.
For the first time, the DOC Film Bazaar has been organized with the objective of strengthening the documentary film ecosystem by offering filmmakers a structured platform to connect with buyers, sponsors, and potential collaborators. The initiative is designed to accelerate film production opportunities and enhance industry participation across multiple stages of documentary development.
The Film Bazaar is structured across three major verticals, namely the DOC Co-Production Market, the DOC Work-In-Progress Lab, and the DOC Viewing Room, each aimed at facilitating distinct aspects of documentary filmmaking, from early-stage collaboration to near-final content evaluation and market readiness.
In alignment with the inauguration, a panel discussion was also conducted focusing on funding models and monetization strategies in documentary filmmaking. The discussion brought attention to evolving financial frameworks and sustainability pathways within the documentary sector.
The six-day film festival will conclude on 21 June, marking the end of a curated showcase of cinematic initiatives and industry engagement activities.
The introduction of the DOC Film Bazaar is being viewed as a significant institutional step toward strengthening documentary production infrastructure, fostering global collaboration, and expanding market access for independent filmmakers within the international film festival ecosystem.
