Kapiva–Kantar Study Finds Stress and Sleep Disruption Driving Uncontrolled Hypertension Among Urban Indians

Kapiva–Kantar study reveals stress and sleep disruption as leading perceived causes of hypertension among urban Indians. Conducted across major Indian cities with 303 respondents, the research highlights workplace stress, sleep issues, and lifestyle factors driving uncontrolled blood pressure, alongside growing use of natural remedies and interest in Ayurvedic solutions.

A new study conducted by Kapiva in collaboration with Kantar has revealed that stress and sleep disruption have emerged as the most significant perceived drivers of hypertension among urban Indians. The findings, based on a survey conducted in February 2026, present a detailed picture of how hypertension is being experienced across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities in India and the factors contributing to its persistent lack of control.

The study covered Mumbai, Delhi National Capital Region, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, and Ahmedabad, with a sample size of 303 respondents. The survey ensured equal representation of male and female participants across age groups ranging from 25 to 65 years and above.

According to the findings, 82 percent of respondents identified stress as the primary perceived cause of high blood pressure, ranking it above diet, genetics, and age combined. Nearly six in ten respondents stated that poor sleep contributes to fluctuations in blood pressure levels. Among younger participants aged 25 to 44 years, 43 percent reported experiencing very high levels of workplace stress. Both poor sleep and acute stress were identified as the leading triggers for uncontrolled blood pressure, each cited by 59 percent of respondents. Seven in ten patients reported experiencing blood pressure fluctuations on a weekly basis.

The physical impact of hypertension was also found to be significant. Forty-three percent of respondents reported frequent headaches, 29 percent experienced anxiety and restlessness, and 18 percent suffered heart palpitations, with nearly half of those affected describing the symptoms as unbearable. The study highlighted that for most individuals, hypertension is a continuous condition influencing daily life rather than a disorder managed through occasional medical consultations.

Commenting on the findings, Kapiva Founder and Chief Executive Officer Ameve Sharma stated that the study underscores hypertension in India as both a stress-related and lifestyle-driven condition. He noted that preventive healthcare solutions and sustained lifestyle interventions are becoming increasingly important alongside clinical treatment approaches. He further emphasized Kapiva’s consumer-first approach in developing health solutions aligned with real-life patient needs.

Dr. R. Govindarajan, Chief Innovation Officer at Kapiva, stated that hypertension is increasingly being influenced by chronic stress, inadequate sleep, mental fatigue, and modern high-pressure lifestyles, particularly among younger populations. He highlighted the importance of a holistic approach that integrates stress management, nutrition, sleep quality, and long-term consistency with medical supervision. He added that Kapiva focuses on combining traditional Ayurvedic knowledge with standardized, research-driven formulations designed to meet contemporary wellness requirements.

The study also identified a parallel pattern of self-care practices among hypertension patients. Thirty-five percent of respondents reported using natural or home remedies alongside prescribed medication. Among these, 71 percent consumed lemon water, 57 percent used amla, 53 percent consumed garlic, and 39 percent used Arjun bark. However, 34 percent of respondents cited inconsistency and inconvenience as barriers to maintaining these practices, while 25 percent admitted difficulty in sustaining them daily.

Despite these challenges, 60 percent of hypertension patients expressed willingness to try an Ayurvedic juice for blood pressure management, a figure that rose to 73 percent among younger respondents aged 25 to 44 years.

Kapiva, a homegrown modern Ayurvedic direct-to-consumer brand, stated that it is focused on making evidence-based Ayurveda simple, modern, and accessible for everyday wellness. The company operates with a dedicated research and development division comprising scientists and researchers and develops standardized herbal formulations using high-quality ingredients. It has expanded its presence internationally through wholly owned subsidiaries in the United States and the Middle East and maintains distribution across more than 50,000 retail outlets in India.

The study underscores a growing shift in how hypertension is perceived and managed in urban India, highlighting the increasing role of stress, sleep disruption, and lifestyle factors in shaping long-term cardiovascular health outcomes.
