Indian Women’s Hockey Team Concludes Intensive Goalkeeping Camp in Bengaluru Ahead of Major International Tournaments
The Indian Women’s Hockey Team завершed an intensive 11-day goalkeeping camp in Bengaluru under expert supervision, focusing on technical skills, tactical awareness, and match readiness as senior players prepare for crucial international tournaments in 2026.
The camp, which began on 22 April, was designed to provide focused, high-performance training exclusively for the team’s goalkeepers. Senior players Savita Punia, Bichu Devi Kharibam, Bansari Solanki, and Madhuri Kindo participated in the sessions, which emphasised technical fundamentals, decision-making, defensive organisation, and tactical awareness in simulated match situations.
Speaking on the importance of such targeted training programmes, Savita highlighted the value of replicating match scenarios during practice. She stated that these camps provide an opportunity to refine skills while encouraging in-depth discussions and attention to detail, enabling goalkeepers to respond more confidently in real match conditions. She also acknowledged the support extended by Anandana, the Coca-Cola India Foundation.
As the most experienced player in the group, Savita underscored her role in mentoring younger goalkeepers. She emphasised the importance of maintaining a positive training environment, observing the progress of teammates, and offering guidance based on her experience. She noted that despite physical fatigue at the end of sessions, overcoming such challenges is essential to building the right competitive mindset.
Bichu Devi Kharibam, who has already earned 60 senior international caps, described the camp as crucial for preparations ahead of major tournaments scheduled this year. She pointed out that the sessions focused not only on improving fitness levels but also on strengthening defensive structure during match situations. She further explained that communication and attention to detail in defensive coordination were key aspects of the training, contributing significantly to a goalkeeper’s overall performance.
Bansari Solanki, who has represented the senior national team in four matches, expressed satisfaction with the learning experience. She identified decision-making under pressure, organising the defence, and maintaining composure on the field as key takeaways from the camp. She stressed that mastering these elements is vital for achieving consistency in performance.
Solanki also provided insight into the coaching approach adopted during the camp. She noted that sessions with David Williamson focused on strengthening basic techniques and making minor adjustments that could significantly enhance performance. Meanwhile, sessions under Sjoerd Marijne concentrated on tactical aspects, including skill execution, set pieces, and defensive strategies during penalty corners. These sessions were aimed at improving the understanding of different game situations and organising the defence accordingly.
The conclusion of this specialised camp marks a significant step in the Indian Women’s Hockey Team’s preparations, reinforcing its commitment to technical excellence and tactical readiness as it gears up for a demanding international calendar.
