BJP Poised for West Bengal Swearing-In on May 9 Amid Tagore Birth Anniversary Symbolism

The Bharatiya Janata Party is expected to form the new government in West Bengal with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9, coinciding with Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary. Administrative procedures involving the Election Commission, Governor, and outgoing Chief Minister are underway as preparations intensify for a historic political transition.

In a development laden with cultural resonance and political significance, the Bharatiya Janata Party is likely to form the new government in West Bengal with a swearing-in ceremony scheduled for May 9, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Sources involved in government formation indicate that the date has been chosen to mark what party leaders describe as a new beginning for the state.

BJP State President Samik Bhattacharya has confirmed the proposed date, stating, “The oath-taking ceremony of the new Chief Minister of West Bengal will take place on May 9,” in comments reported by the news agency ANI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier indicated the timeline during his final campaign rally in Barrackpore, asserting confidence in the post-result transition. “I am going back with the confidence that after the results on May 4, I will come back here to attend the BJP’s oath-taking ceremony,” he had stated.

Following the electoral outcome, the Prime Minister also invoked the ideals of Rabindranath Tagore while addressing party workers at the Bharatiya Janata Party headquarters in New Delhi, stating the party’s resolve to build a Bengal “where the mind is without fear and the head is held high,” reflecting the humanist vision of the poet and philosopher.

Subsequently, the Chief Electoral Officer is expected to formally brief Governor R. N. Ravi on May 6. Following this, the Governor will invite outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to submit her resignation in accordance with constitutional procedure. She is then expected to be requested to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government is sworn in, ensuring uninterrupted administrative continuity in the state.

The proposed swearing-in date, falling on May 9, which corresponds to the 25th day of the Bengali month Boishakh in the traditional calendar, is being seen as symbolically significant. Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary is widely observed across West Bengal as a cultural occasion of profound importance, marked by recitations, music performances, and literary programmes celebrating his legacy.

With the Bharatiya Janata Party set to end over four decades of alternating Left and Trinamool Congress governance, the upcoming ceremony is expected to mark a decisive moment in the state’s political trajectory. Official announcements regarding the final schedule are expected shortly as preparations intensify.
