Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Anita Deka Mahanta stated that she has been subjected to severe online abuse since the clip gained traction. She asserted that the voice in the recording is not hers and expressed distress over the relentless harassment she has faced on social media platforms.
She further revealed that the situation has escalated beyond online abuse to serious threats against her life. According to her statement, she has received threats involving acid attacks and being burned with petrol, all linked to the viral audio clip. Despite the intensity of these threats, she reiterated that the voice in question does not belong to her.
Detailing the legal steps she has taken, Mahanta said that she filed a complaint with the Criminal Investigation Department on October 6, 2025, alleging that the audio clip was being misused to tarnish her reputation. She added that on October 9, she received confirmation that the case had been transferred to Panbazar Police Station for further investigation.
Mahanta also raised concerns about public judgment being influenced by unverified content. She emphasized that while the situation is serious and legal proceedings are underway, conclusions should not be drawn without verifying facts. She questioned the role of judicial institutions if public opinion begins to dictate outcomes without due process.
Reaffirming her position on her husband’s case, she stated that Shyamkanu Mahanta is innocent and has been wrongfully detained. She further claimed that a court in Singapore had previously ruled that there was no foul play involved in the incident and categorized it as an accidental death.
Meanwhile, a fast-track court in Guwahati is scheduled to deliver its verdict on the bail plea of Shyamkanu Mahanta. During earlier hearings, the court examined arguments related to the bail application as well as a plea seeking custody of seized items before reserving its decision.
The case continues to draw attention due to the combination of legal complexities, allegations of defamation, and the broader public reaction fueled by viral content, underscoring the critical need for factual verification and judicial integrity in high-profile matters.
