High-Level Security Grid Activated as Chardham Yatra Commences April 19 with Elite IPS Oversight
The Chardham Yatra begins April 19 under an unprecedented security blanket overseen by six elite IPS officers. With 7,000 police personnel, ATS teams at Dhams, and SDRF-NDRF units stationed across 149 sectors, the administration aims to tackle 109 landslide zones and 61 black spots. ADG and IG rank officials will personally monitor routes to Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri.
The strategic deployment continues with IG Vimi Sachdeva assigned to inspect the Haridwar transit point, while IG Nilesh Anand Bharne takes charge of the Kedaranath Dham route. The responsibility for the Yamunotri Dham circuit has been handed to IG Anant Shankar Takwale, and IG Sunil Kumar will monitor the critical junctions of Rishikesh, Lakshman Jhula, and Munikireti. To support this leadership, a formidable force of 7,000 police personnel has been deployed across a meticulously mapped territory divided into 16 Super Zones, 43 Zones, and 149 Sectors. To further fortify the security grid, specialized Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) teams will be stationed directly at the Dhams to provide an elite layer of protection.
Logistical and safety preparedness has reached an unprecedented scale with 80 disaster management teams positioned along the route, supported by SDRF at 37 locations and NDRF units at 8 strategic points. To manage the heavy traffic flow, authorities have identified 118 parking lots; however, the administration faces significant operational challenges including 52 bottlenecks, 109 landslide zones, 274 accident-prone areas, and 61 identified black spots. This comprehensive mobilization underscores a rigorous state effort to safeguard the spiritual journey of thousands against both topographical hazards and security threats, ensuring the 2026 Chardham Yatra operates under a sophisticated, multi-layered safety net.
