GUWAHATI — Polling officially commenced at 7 a.m. across all 126 assembly seats in Assam, marking the beginning of a high-stakes single-phase election held amid tight security. Key BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, have issued urgent calls for high participation. They urged the electorate to back continued development, secure borders, and cultural preservation, specifically highlighting milestones such as the doubling of per capita income and significant infrastructure gains achieved during their tenure. The party aims to defend and expand upon its performance in 2021, where it secured a 60-seat victory.

Challenging this momentum is the opposition Congress, which has formed a strategic alliance with Raijor Dal. The coalition is pushing a platform centered on welfare promises, specifically targeting health insurance and land rights to bridge the gap with the ruling party. As the democratic process unfolds under heavy surveillance to ensure order, the state remains the focal point of national political attention. This election will ultimately decide if the BJP’s narrative of growth holds firm or if the opposition’s focus on social security resonates with the masses. Following the conclusion of voting, the counting of ballots is scheduled for May 4.
