Jaishankar to Visit Mauritius and UAE Amid US-Iran Ceasefire, Energy Security Tops Agenda

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit Mauritius and the UAE from April 9–12 amid a US-Iran ceasefire. With energy security at the forefront, the trip follows rising Middle East tensions, disrupted global trade, and renewed diplomatic efforts for regional stability.

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will travel to the UAE this week, marking the first such visit by an Indian minister since the onset of the Iran war and the broader Middle East crisis, sources said.

According to sources, Jaishankar will visit Mauritius and the UAE between April 9 and April 12. He will first travel to Mauritius to attend the Indian Ocean Conference (IOC), followed by his visit to the UAE. Sources indicated that energy security remains at the top of the agenda during the visit.

The announcement of his travel comes hours after the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, with President Donald Trump accepting Tehran's 10-point conditions and describing them as “workable.” India welcomed the ceasefire, expressing hope that it would lead to lasting peace in the Middle East.

In an official statement, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict. The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks. We expect that unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz.”

The war began on February 28, when the United States and Israel carried out coordinated airstrikes across Iran following stalled nuclear talks and claims that Tehran had resumed its nuclear activities. The strikes, named ‘Operation Epic Fury,’ targeted multiple Iranian cities and resulted in the deaths of several top leaders, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and members of his family.

Iran subsequently launched retaliatory strikes, causing damage across Gulf regions, including Dubai, Kuwait, Abu Dhabi, Qatar, and Bahrain. It also shut the Strait of Hormuz for shipping, a critical global trade route, which it has now agreed to reopen with a charge.

Meanwhile, Sergio Gor, who is currently in the United States, attended a dinner at the White House on Tuesday night with President Donald Trump, just hours before the ceasefire announcement. According to Gor, discussions during the meeting included US-India relations.

“Just had an outstanding dinner with President Trump. We discussed his unwavering determination to bring global stability, the historic achievements of his presidency, the strong future of India-US ties, and so much more! A very memorable evening as history unfolded in real time,” he wrote in a post on X.

The visit by Jaishankar, set against the backdrop of a fragile ceasefire and ongoing geopolitical tensions, underscores India’s strategic focus on energy security and diplomatic engagement in a region critical to global trade and stability.
