Preeti Saran, whose distinguished 36-year career in the Indian Foreign Service includes roles as Secretary (East) at the External Affairs Ministry and India’s envoy to Vietnam, was re-elected in her personal capacity to the CESCR. Having chaired the committee’s session last year, Saran brings a wealth of experience from previous diplomatic missions in Toronto, Geneva, Dhaka, Cairo, and Moscow. As part of a body of 18 independent experts, she will continue to monitor the implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. This Covenant enshrines essential human protections, including the rights to adequate food, housing, education, health, social security, water, sanitation, and work.
India’s concurrent election to the Committee on NGOs places it within an influential body tasked with vetting applications for consultative status and reclassification requests from civil society groups. This committee serves as a critical gatekeeper, ensuring that participating organizations are legitimate before they engage in UN activities. Furthermore, India’s role on the Commission on Science and Technology for Development will involve framing the critical issues that influence these fields and their subsequent impact on global development and a sustainable future.
The Committee for Programme and Coordination will see Indian representation assisting the ECOSOC by reviewing the activities of various UN agencies on a sector-by-sector basis. This administrative oversight ensures that diverse work programmes remain compatible and complementary across the UN system. By securing these strategic positions, India reinforces its influence at the heart of the UN’s primary mechanism for advancing the three dimensions of sustainable development: economic, social, and environmental.
