Surprise Police Station Inspection by Uttarakhand CM Sparks Controversy Over Officer’s Suspension
Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami’s surprise inspection of Dehradun’s Dalanwala police station led to the suspension of the station in-charge found absent. Later details revealed the officer was on official duty elsewhere in the same jurisdiction, raising questions over communication gaps.
According to official information, Chief Minister Dhami arrived unexpectedly at the Dalanwala Kotwali in Dehradun as part of a broader inspection drive aimed at assessing policing standards and preparedness. During the visit, the station’s in-charge, Inspector Manoj Mainwal, was not present at the premises. Viewing the absence as a lapse in duty, the Chief Minister ordered that the officer be placed on “line duty,” a form of administrative suspension from active station responsibilities.
However, sources familiar with the events indicate that Inspector Mainwal was not absent from duty but was instead deployed elsewhere within the same police jurisdiction at the time of the inspection. The Chief Minister had reportedly gone to inspect a training ground developed for Agniveer recruits, which also falls under the Dalanwala police station’s area of responsibility. Inspector Mainwal was present at that location, overseeing duties related to the visit, but did not reach the police station before the Chief Minister arrived there.
Officials suggest that the Chief Minister may not have been fully briefed about the inspector’s deployment at the training ground, leading to the swift disciplinary action. The matter has drawn attention due to Inspector Mainwal’s standing within the police establishment, as he is considered a special officer attached to the Inspector General.
The incident has underscored the challenges of coordination and communication during high-level surprise inspections, particularly when multiple official engagements occur within the same jurisdiction. While the action reflects the Chief Minister’s strict approach to accountability and discipline, it also highlights the need for accurate, real-time information flow between administrative and police officials to avoid unintended consequences.
