Speaking in Lucknow, Yadav said the matter is not confined to public anxiety in Uttar Pradesh alone, but has become a national issue because of where and how the alleged irregularities occurred. He described the case as deeply troubling, noting that the suspected misuse and diversion of codeine-based medicines has emerged from what he termed a highly sensitive and critical sector.
According to Yadav, the magnitude of the alleged scam runs into thousands of crores of rupees, making it impossible to dismiss as a routine lapse or isolated failure. He asserted that such large-scale irregularities point to systemic weaknesses, particularly a lack of transparency and accountability, which have eroded public trust in the authorities responsible for oversight.
The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister stressed that the issue has wider implications for governance and public confidence, especially when controlled pharmaceutical substances are involved. He argued that failure to act decisively in such cases risks normalising impunity and undermining the rule of law.
Calling for a thorough investigation, Yadav said it is essential that those responsible are identified and punished in accordance with the law. He added that firm action is necessary not only to deliver justice in the present case, but also to prevent similar incidents in the future and to safeguard democratic institutions and law enforcement mechanisms.
The controversy has intensified political scrutiny over regulatory practices and enforcement in the pharmaceutical sector, with opposition leaders framing the issue as a test of the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability and public safety.
