Bangladeshi Student Uprising Leader Osman Hadi Dies in Singapore After Assassination Attempt
Bangladeshi student uprising leader Sharif Osman Hadi has died in a Singapore hospital after being shot in the head in Dhaka. Airlifted for emergency treatment, the senior Inqilab Mancha leader succumbed to his injuries, prompting efforts to repatriate his body to Bangladesh.
Osman Hadi, a senior leader of the student protest platform Inqilab Mancha, was shot in the head earlier this month outside a mosque in the Bangladeshi capital. The attack sparked immediate outrage, with demonstrations held in Dhaka condemning the violence and demanding accountability. Images from the protests showed activists holding posters bearing Hadi’s photograph, underscoring his prominence within the movement.
Following the shooting, Hadi’s condition was described as critical. He was airlifted from Bangladesh to Singapore on December 15 and admitted to the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Singapore General Hospital. According to the official statement, doctors from SGH and the National Neuroscience Institute provided intensive emergency treatment in an effort to save his life.
Despite these efforts, Hadi succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025. “Despite the best efforts of the doctors from Singapore General Hospital and the National Neuroscience Institute, Mr Hadi succumbed to his injuries,” the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in its statement, formally confirming his death.
Singaporean authorities added that they are working closely with the Bangladesh High Commission in Singapore to facilitate the repatriation of Hadi’s body to Dhaka. Further details regarding funeral arrangements are expected to be coordinated with Bangladeshi officials and the family.
Hadi’s death marks a significant and somber moment for Bangladesh’s student movement, which has played a notable role in recent political activism. The killing of a young protest leader has intensified concerns over political violence and the safety of activists, adding to the urgency of calls for a thorough investigation into the attack and accountability for those responsible.
