Sourav Ganguly Calls for Shubman Gill to Lead India Across All Formats, Questions Surya’s T20 Captaincy
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has urged the BCCI to appoint Shubman Gill as the national team’s captain across all formats, arguing that current T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav should be replaced. Citing Gill’s standout leadership and batting on the recent England tour, Ganguly called for stability and patience in India’s captaincy decisions.
Ganguly’s comments arrive at a moment when discussions around split captaincy have dominated Indian cricket circles, particularly with limited-overs head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly in favour of separate leaders for red-ball and white-ball squads. However, Ganguly signalled that the opposite approach may serve India better, insisting that Gill has already proven his aptitude for the top job.
Recalling India’s recent tour of England, Ganguly highlighted Gill’s composure and performance in the absence of senior stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. “Look at how he led the team three months ago in England,” he said. “With a young squad and without two of India’s biggest names, Gill excelled both as a captain and as a batsman.” During that Test series, Gill amassed 750 runs and hit four centuries—an output Ganguly described as emblematic of a leader who thrives under pressure, especially overseas.
Ganguly cautioned against reacting hastily to short-term fluctuations in form, arguing that young leaders must be given time, stability and institutional support. He noted that brief periods of struggle should not overshadow sustained excellence. “It’s unfair to judge a player who performs brilliantly for one quarter and then faces criticism the next. Decisions taken in haste always backfire,” he said. “Gill deserves continuity as captain; he should not be written off based on a few setbacks.”
The former captain’s endorsement is likely to fuel ongoing debates within Indian cricket administration and among selectors, who are weighing stability, long-term planning and tactical leadership across formats. Whether Ganguly’s remarks influence future decisions remains to be seen, but his support underscores a growing sentiment that Shubman Gill represents India’s next leadership era—one that some believe should begin immediately.
