Air Travel Chaos Prompts Rare Response from PM Modi as IndiGo Disruptions Enter Second Week

India’s aviation sector faces turmoil as a weeklong wave of IndiGo flight cancellations and delays disrupts travel nationwide. Prime Minister Narendra Modi voices deep concern, urging that rules must not burden passengers, while the DGCA seeks explanations from IndiGo’s leadership over the widespread operational breakdown.

India’s air travel network has been under severe strain for more than a week, and on Tuesday Prime Minister Narendra Modi broke his silence on the crisis surrounding IndiGo’s large-scale flight cancellations and delays. Speaking through Parliamentary and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju at an NDA meeting, the Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the disorder that has left thousands of passengers stranded across major airports.

Rijiju said the Prime Minister was unequivocal in his message: no administrative process or regulatory requirement should translate into hardship for the public. Modi stressed that rules and compliance norms remain essential, but the systems enforcing them must function without causing unnecessary disruption to ordinary citizens. Rijiju quoted him as saying that the government must ensure people “do not face any inconvenience because of us,” and that laws should enable smoother operations, not become a burden.

The remarks come at a moment when the country’s busiest aviation routes have been thrown off balance. Since December 2, IndiGo has cancelled hundreds of flights daily, while many others have suffered significant delays. The cascading breakdown has clogged terminals nationwide, creating long queues, missed connections, and widespread frustration among passengers. The situation has also triggered political criticism, with questions being raised about how a single airline’s operational turmoil could ripple so widely across the national aviation ecosystem.

Amid the intensifying crisis, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo’s top leadership, including CEO Pieter Elbers and COO Isidre Porqueras, seeking an explanation for the disruption and the severe operational inconsistencies reported across the network.

As the government reassures the public of corrective action, the Prime Minister’s rare intervention underscores the seriousness of the situation. With air travel serving as a critical national infrastructure, the ongoing disruptions have highlighted the fragility of aviation operations and the urgent need for robust systems that can withstand unexpected shocks without compromising public convenience.
