Nepal’s Karnali Highway: Deadly Cliff Drops and Sharp Curves Put Lives at Risk

Nepal’s Karnali Highway, known as the Death Valley Highway, combines breathtaking Himalayan views with dangerous curves and steep cliff drops. With 917 deaths since 2014-15, the route remains a vital yet perilous link for remote communities.

Nepal’s Karnali Highway, also known as NH58, has drawn attention for its steep cliff drops, sharp curves and dangerous road conditions through the rugged Himalayan foothills of western Nepal. Known locally as the “Death Valley Highway,” the route serves as a vital connection for remote areas while carrying a grim record of road accidents and fatalities.

The highway links remote parts of western Nepal to the borders of India and China. Despite its importance for local connectivity, its challenging terrain has made it a source of concern, with road accidents accounting for nearly 56 percent of the province’s total, according to the available figures.

Since the 2014-15 period, the highway has been associated with 917 deaths, highlighting the human cost of travelling along the route. Its winding stretches, tight bends and steep drops have contributed to its reputation as one of the region’s most dangerous roads.

The highway has also attracted reactions online, where users have expressed a mix of awe and fear. While the surrounding Himalayan landscape draws admiration for its views, the narrow curves and potentially deadly drops have raised concerns about the risks faced by those travelling through the area.

For residents of remote communities, however, the Karnali Highway remains an important transport link. Its role in connecting isolated areas underscores the difficult balance between maintaining access to essential routes and addressing the dangers posed by the region’s challenging terrain.

The highway’s combination of dramatic scenery, critical connectivity and a history of fatal accidents continues to draw attention to road safety concerns in western Nepal.
