UNKAPPED Launches in India to Bridge AI Skills Gap With Forward-Deployed Engineers

UNKAPPED is launching in India to help enterprises overcome the AI deployment skills gap through embedded engineering teams, with targets to audit 100 businesses by March 2027 and develop 100 forward-deployed engineers by 2028.

India’s technology sector is witnessing growing demand for forward-deployed engineers, specialists who work directly within businesses to identify tasks suited for artificial intelligence (AI) and deploy systems that deliver measurable results. Experienced forward-deployed engineers in India now command annual salaries of up to Rs. 1.55 crore, as global platforms, AI labs and capability centres compete to hire them. However, most Indian enterprises cannot match that demand for talent. Addressing this gap, UNKAPPED Inc., a San Francisco-headquartered firm founded by Indian entrepreneurs, is launching in India to make these capabilities accessible to businesses.

UNKAPPED is an Applied AI and go-to-market engineering firm built around a forward-deployed model. Its engineers work within clients’ existing systems and across departments, including sales, customer service, finance and operations. They identify tasks that can be shifted to AI, build the agents and automations required to perform them, and remain involved until the systems are running in production and delivering measured results.

The company has outlined three commitments for its India launch. By March 2027, it aims to take 100 Indian enterprises through its AI-readiness audit. By December 2027, it plans to deploy AI in at least 25 of these enterprises, with each implementation delivering a measured result. By the end of 2028, it also intends to develop 100 India-based forward-deployed engineers, training them through live enterprise work rather than classroom instruction.

The initiative comes as Indian enterprises continue to face challenges in moving AI projects beyond the planning and pilot stages. According to a Dun & Bradstreet survey this year, every organisation surveyed has an AI project underway. However, 44% remain in the planning or piloting stages, while only 4% report that their data is fully ready to scale AI.

“India does not have a shortage of engineers. It has a shortage of engineers who have shipped AI inside a real business,” said Neeraj Kumar, Co-founder and Chief Technology and Product Officer at UNKAPPED. “You cannot learn that from a course. Our engineers learn it the way the best forward-deployed teams do: sitting with the business, finding the work and owning the outcome until it runs.”

Indian enterprises also face specific operational and regulatory challenges when deploying AI. Customer and operations data is often distributed across legacy enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, regional platforms and spreadsheets. Businesses serve customers in multiple languages through WhatsApp, voice and email. Meanwhile, the Digital Personal Data Protection rules are raising the standards governing how data can be used. Many enterprises continue to procure technology through traditional software-development models, in which specifications are written, handed to a development partner and followed by a wait for delivery.

“India built the world’s software. Now it has to deploy the world’s AI, and that is a different job,” said Sachin Jha, Co-Founder and CEO of UNKAPPED. “The global platforms and labs are hiring forward-deployed engineers as fast as they can, for their largest customers. Every Indian enterprise deserves the same capability, without first having to find and hire it.”

UNKAPPED operates across three areas: forward-deployed engineering, Applied AI and go-to-market engineering. Its forward-deployed engineers work within client teams to connect data, resolve access and permission issues, integrate AI agents with existing systems and move deployments into production.

Under its Applied AI offering, the company develops AI agents for customer service, collections, document processing, sales and operations. Testing, evaluation, human oversight and governance are incorporated into these systems. Its go-to-market engineering services focus on buyer signals, account scoring, routing and revenue operations, with the aim of enabling sales teams to concentrate on accounts that are ready to buy.

“Most enterprises are buying AI the way they bought software,” said Lakshmi Sindhuri, Co-founder and Head of Enterprise Transformation. “That worked for an ERP. AI changes how the work itself gets done, so someone has to be inside the company doing it.”

The company’s founders bring product and platform experience from a global cloud provider, enterprise transformation leadership from global banking and payments, and top 1% go-to-market expertise. UNKAPPED’s engineers already work alongside platform and forward-deployed teams at major cloud providers.

The firm serves companies ranging from pre-seed businesses to private equity-backed enterprises and also works with the investors behind them. Each engagement begins with an AI-readiness audit, through which enterprises can apply via unkapped.ai or contact the company at hello@unkapped.ai.

Headquartered in San Francisco, UNKAPPED Inc. specialises in Applied AI and go-to-market engineering, embedding forward-deployed practices and top 1% GTM experts within client teams. It helps companies ranging from Series A businesses to private equity-backed enterprises convert technology investments into operational AI systems, scalable revenue operations and measurable returns. Its areas of expertise include cybersecurity, developer tools, cloud and AI-native software.

The company also maintains a YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/@getUnkapped.
