PMI Campus-to-Career Challenge Connects 133 Students Across Six Cities to Global Platforms

PMI’s Campus-to-Career Challenge brought 133 students from six cities together to tackle sustainability and community issues. Nine students gained exposure through PMSAC26 in Bengaluru and the Global Leadership Institute Meeting in Seoul.

The Project Management Institute’s (PMI) regional Campus-to-Career Challenge brought together 133 students from six cities and regions across South Asia to address community and sustainability challenges, develop workplace-ready project leadership skills and gain exposure to professional networks in India and abroad. Nine students advanced to international and professional platforms, with five presenting their solutions at the Project Management South Asia Conference (PMSAC26) in Bengaluru and four gaining global exposure at the PMI Global Leadership Institute Meeting (LIM) in Seoul.

The initiative engaged students from Kerala, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Gujarat in applying project management principles to real-world issues, including waste segregation and sustainability awareness. Through practical projects, participants learned to identify problems, map stakeholders, assess risks and constraints, prepare implementation plans and consider how outcomes could be measured.

Students from Presidency University, Bengaluru, explored ways to reduce groundwater dependency through integrated water resource management. Students from L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, developed a structured waste segregation initiative, while participants from SMEF’s Brick School of Architecture, Pune, focused on encouraging sustainable habits among schoolchildren.

The challenge provided students with practical experience in addressing problems rooted in their local communities. Participants worked through the complexities of collaboration, stakeholder expectations, changing assumptions and execution constraints while developing solutions designed around local needs.

Amit Goyal, Managing Director, South Asia, PMI, said, “The transition from campus to the workplace requires students to move beyond theoretical knowledge and develop the confidence to navigate ambiguity, collaborate with stakeholders and deliver outcomes. Through the Campus-to-Career Challenge, we are creating opportunities for students to experience these realities early in their journey. By combining practical problem solving with mentoring, leadership development and exposure to the project management community, we aim to help young talent build capabilities that will remain relevant across industries and geographies. Our focus is to strengthen the connection between academia and the professional world while preparing the next generation of project leaders.”

Abhin. A, a student leader from the PMI-DUK Student Club at Kerala University of Digital Sciences, Innovation and Technology, described his experience at the international leadership meeting as transformative.

“The Asia Pacific-South Asia Leadership Institute Meeting 2026 was a transformative experience that broadened my understanding of leadership, student engagement and community building. Representing PMI Kerala Chapter and PMI-DUK Student Club on an international platform gave me the opportunity to learn from diverse perspectives and connect with PMI leaders and student members across the region. The experience strengthened my confidence and inspired me to create more mentoring, leadership and collaboration opportunities within our student community,” he said.

Participation from Kerala, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Gujarat brought diverse regional perspectives to the programme. The initiative demonstrated how project leadership can help translate community needs into practical solutions, while giving students experience in managing competing expectations, assessing constraints and planning implementation.

Platforms such as the PMI Leadership Institute Meeting in Seoul and PMSAC26 also enabled students to take their work beyond the classroom, engage with professionals and gain a broader understanding of how project leadership can be applied across different contexts.

PMI has more than 25 student clubs and over 1,800 student members across South Asia. Through these clubs and its student membership programme, the institute offers students opportunities to learn, lead and strengthen project management skills for their careers. Students can join as PMI Student Members and become part of an existing Student Club. Universities interested in establishing a new club can apply through the PMI Student Club programme on projectmanagement.com.

PMI hosted the 18th annual PMSAC26 on 3 October in Bengaluru. The conference brought together more than 800 project leaders and representatives from over 180 organisations under the theme “MORE, Together: Future-Ready in the Age of AI.”
