Chennai Corporation Strengthens Women’s Safety Measures Across Public Spaces, Transport

Greater Chennai Corporation holds a key meeting with colleges, NGOs and government departments to strengthen women's safety in public spaces, transport and campuses while addressing technology-related risks and AI misuse.

 

The Greater Chennai Corporation held a coordination meeting with representatives of colleges and various organisations on Thursday to strengthen measures for women’s safety in public places and public transport.

The meeting, chaired by Corporation Commissioner G.S. Sameeran at the Ripon Buildings complex, focused on safety measures for women in public spaces, buses, railway stations, Metro stations, colleges and app-based taxis.

Representatives from Vaishnav College, Queen Mary's College, the Madras School of Social Work, various NGOs and government departments participated in the meeting.

Officials discussed ways to address technology-related safety concerns and create awareness among college students about the misuse of artificial intelligence to portray women in a derogatory or misleading manner.

The Corporation also advised colleges to appoint nodal officers to handle gender-related complaints and establish women's clubs or student groups to strengthen awareness and safety initiatives on campuses.

The meeting was organised by the Corporation's Gender and Policy Lab as part of its efforts to promote women's safety and awareness of social welfare schemes.
