The appointment was confirmed by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports on September 2. Laxman will take charge of the Indian team for the Asian Games as its T20 campaign overlaps with the home ODI series against the West Indies, scheduled from September 27 to October 3.
The Gautam Gambhir-led senior coaching staff will oversee the ODI side during the overlap, while Laxman will lead the team competing at the Asian Games.
Cricket at the Asian Games is scheduled to take place from September 17 to October 3, with India entering the competition at the quarter-final stage on September 28.
Laxman was also part of India’s coaching setup during the 2024 Asian Games, where India won gold.
His appointment places him at the helm of India’s men’s side for the Aichi-Nagoya Games, with the Asian Games campaign coinciding with the national team’s home ODI commitments against the West Indies.
