Laid Off After 14 Years, 56-Year-Old Former Insurance Employee Turns Porter Rider to Survive, Emotional Story Sparks Nationwide Debate

The emotional story of 56-year-old Manoj from Noida, who became a Porter delivery partner after losing his 14-year insurance job during the 2023 layoffs, has gone viral. Shared by social entrepreneur Kiran Verma, the incident has sparked a nationwide debate on corporate layoffs, age discrimination, employee loyalty, and the growing dependence on India's gig economy.

Life can change without warning, and the story of 56-year-old Manoj from Noida has become a powerful reminder of that reality. After dedicating 14 years to a leading insurance company, Manoj lost his job during the 2023 wave of layoffs. Unable to secure new employment because of his age and declining health, he now works as a motorcycle delivery partner for the Porter app to support his family. His emotional journey has gone viral on social media, prompting widespread public reaction and a response from Porter.

The story was shared by Noida-based social entrepreneur Kiran Verma, founder of the initiative "Change With One Meal." Verma had booked a Porter motorcycle rider to deliver an important letter within the city for a delivery charge of just Rs 40. Expecting a routine delivery, he was instead greeted by 56-year-old Manoj at his doorstep.

According to Verma, Manoj struggled slightly while climbing the stairs to the first floor but maintained a smile throughout. When offered water, Manoj replied with a smile, saying that he had not received any work that day and had been waiting for orders since morning.

Impressed by Manoj's polished communication and professional appearance, Verma began speaking with him. During the conversation, Manoj revealed that he had worked in the administration department of Tata AIA Life Insurance for 14 years before being laid off in 2023.

Describing his experience in the corporate sector, Manoj shared an analogy that has deeply resonated with professionals across social media. He said that curry leaves are added first while cooking to enhance the flavor of a dish, but they are also the first ingredient removed and discarded before eating. He compared long-serving employees in the corporate world to curry leaves, saying they are valued when needed but discarded when considered no longer useful.

Manoj said he attended several job interviews after losing his position. However, companies were unwilling to hire him because of his age and declining health. With no other employment opportunities available, India's gig economy became his final source of livelihood, allowing him to work as a delivery partner without strict age restrictions.

After listening to Manoj's story, Verma paid him more than the delivery fee before watching him leave from his balcony. Reflecting on the encounter, Verma wrote that life is never easy, but the most painful situation arises when society no longer considers a person capable of working.

The story spread rapidly after being shared on LinkedIn, triggering an emotional debate among professionals, recruiters, and members of the public. Many users argued that companies often fail to value employee loyalty despite years of dedicated service.

Amid the growing discussion, Porter also responded to the viral post. The company thanked Verma for sharing the touching story and for recognizing the dedication and hard work of its delivery partner.

The emotional account has reignited discussions about layoffs, age-related employment challenges, and the growing dependence on India's gig economy among experienced professionals who struggle to find opportunities after losing long-term corporate jobs. The story of Manoj has become a symbol of resilience, highlighting both the harsh realities of corporate employment and the determination to continue working despite overwhelming personal and professional setbacks.
