Monsoon Fury Claims Lives Across India as Wayanad Death Toll Rises, Delhi Faces Flooding, and Maharashtra and Gujarat Reel Under Heavy Rain
Heavy monsoon rains continue to devastate multiple states across India, raising the Wayanad landslide death toll to four, causing severe flooding in Delhi and the National Capital Region, triggering a deadly building collapse in Pune, and claiming lives in Surat as rescue, evacuation, and relief operations remain underway amid continuing weather alerts.
Kerala Minister A P Anilkumar confirmed that one more body was recovered from Zone 1 of the search area on Thursday morning, taking the Wayanad landslide death toll to four. Speaking to reporters, the minister said search operations would continue in Zones 1 and 2, with rescue teams also concentrating efforts near the river in an attempt to locate any remaining victims.
In the national capital, two trees were uprooted on Raja Dhir Singh Marg in the East of Kailash area of southeast Delhi on Thursday, disrupting traffic movement. According to the Delhi Fire Service, no injuries were reported in either incident.
Heavy overnight rainfall also left large parts of Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad waterlogged, severely affecting normal life. Visuals from the affected areas showed commuters struggling to travel through roads submerged under rainwater as persistent downpours continued across the National Capital Region.
The India Meteorological Department issued red and orange alerts for the region, warning of thunderstorms and additional heavy rainfall. Despite the widespread disruption, Delhi recorded its cleanest air quality in ten months on Wednesday. The city's 24-hour average Air Quality Index stood at 59 in the satisfactory category, marking the lowest reading since September 4, 2025, when the index was recorded at 58.
The impact of the intense monsoon extended to several other states. In Maharashtra, at least 11 people are feared dead after a building collapsed in Pune's Pimpri Chinchwad on Wednesday. Officials said the collapse occurred after a massive mound of garbage crashed onto the structure following continuous heavy rainfall that has battered Pune, Mumbai, and surrounding areas.
In Gujarat's Surat, officials reported that at least nine people have died over the past few days as relentless rains inundated the city. Thousands of residents from low-lying areas have been evacuated to safer locations, while authorities distributed food packets in waterlogged localities to assist affected communities.
The continuing spell of heavy monsoon rainfall has left multiple states confronting loss of life, infrastructure damage, large-scale flooding, and ongoing rescue and relief operations, underscoring the widespread impact of the season's severe weather across the country.
