MS Dhoni Marks 45th Birthday with Surprise Trent Bridge Appearance as India Suffers Historic T20I Defeat Against England

MS Dhoni celebrated his 45th birthday with a surprise appearance at Trent Bridge during the third T20I between India and England. While fans welcomed the legendary former captain with excitement and urged him to return, India endured the biggest T20I defeat in its history, losing by 125 runs as England took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

Former India captain MS Dhoni made a surprise appearance at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Tuesday, July 7, as he celebrated his 45th birthday by watching Shreyas Iyer-led Team India take on England in the third T20 International. Dhoni's unexpected visit delighted cricket fans, but the occasion ended on a disappointing note as India suffered the biggest T20I defeat in the team's history.

Dhoni, who has largely stayed away from public appearances since retiring from international cricket, attended the match despite maintaining a low profile outside the Indian Premier League. The former Chennai Super Kings captain remains an active IPL player after being retained by the franchise for Rs 4 crore as an uncapped player ahead of IPL 2026. However, he has not yet announced his retirement from the tournament.

India's celebrations quickly turned into disappointment after the visitors were bowled out for just 76 runs and lost by 125 runs against England. The crushing defeat handed England a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series with only two matches remaining.

A viral video from the stadium captured emotional fans urging Dhoni to come out of retirement and play for Team India once again. Responding with light-hearted gestures, the legendary wicketkeeper-batter pointed toward his white beard and indicated that he now struggled to walk, let alone run, acknowledging the effects of age.

Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020 after representing India for the final time in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Manchester, where India suffered a heartbreaking defeat.

Over an illustrious international career spanning 538 matches, Dhoni scored 17,266 runs and completed 829 dismissals as a wicketkeeper. In One-Day Internationals, he accumulated 10,773 runs in 350 matches at an outstanding average of 50.57, including 10 centuries and 73 half-centuries, with an unbeaten 183 as his highest score. He remains India's sixth-highest run-scorer in One-Day International cricket, while Sachin Tendulkar continues to hold the record with 18,426 runs.

Dhoni has also enjoyed a remarkable Indian Premier League career, scoring 5,439 runs in 278 matches at an average of 38.3 and a strike rate of 137.45, including 24 half-centuries. As captain, he guided Chennai Super Kings to a record five Indian Premier League titles, cementing his legacy as one of the most successful leaders in franchise cricket.

His captaincy record for India remains among the finest in world cricket. In 200 One-Day Internationals as captain, Dhoni led India to 110 victories and 74 defeats, while five matches ended in ties and 11 produced no result, giving him a winning percentage of 55. In T20 Internationals, he captained India in 72 matches, registering 41 wins and 28 defeats, with one tie and two no-results, resulting in a winning percentage of 56.94.

In Test cricket, Dhoni captained India in 60 matches, winning 27, losing 18 and drawing 15, finishing with a winning percentage of 45. Despite stepping away from international cricket six years ago, Dhoni's surprise appearance on his birthday once again demonstrated his enduring popularity, while India's historic defeat ensured that the occasion will be remembered for both the legendary captain's presence and one of the team's darkest days in T20 International cricket.
