Punjab University PhD Scholar Dies After Alleged Electric Shock During Heavy Rain

A Punjab University PhD scholar, Jyoti from Rewari, Haryana, allegedly died after an electric shock during heavy rain in Chandigarh. The incident has raised concerns over campus electrical safety as an investigation begins.

A tragic incident was reported from Punjab University in Chandigarh on Tuesday (28 Tuesday) morning as heavy rainfall lashed the city, where a PhD scholar allegedly died due to an electric shock at the university’s South Campus. The incident has raised serious questions over campus safety arrangements and electrical precautions during the rainy season.

The deceased student was identified as Jyoti, a resident of Rewari, Haryana. She was pursuing research in the Department of Biotechnology at Punjab University and was staying in Girls Hostel Number-10.

On Tuesday morning, Jyoti was heading from the hostel towards her department. Due to continuous rainfall, water had accumulated on the main route. To avoid the waterlogged area, she took a nearby unpaved path.

According to people present at the spot, as the student moved ahead on the path, she suddenly came in contact with electricity and collapsed on the spot. Initial information suggests that the electric current may have spread from a nearby electrical junction box. However, the official confirmation will be made only after the completion of the investigation.

Immediately after the incident, people nearby helped the student and rushed her to the Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector-16. Doctors examined her and declared her dead. As soon as the news of the accident spread, a wave of grief prevailed across the university campus.

The university administration has started an investigation into the matter. A technical team is working to determine the reason behind the electric current and whether any negligence occurred in the electrical arrangements. If any lapse is found during the investigation, action may be taken against the concerned officials.

Meanwhile, the student’s family has been informed about the incident. Her mother and brother are reportedly on their way from Haryana to Chandigarh. Fellow researchers and teachers associated with Jyoti have also expressed deep sorrow over the incident.

Experts have stated that during the rainy season, extra caution is necessary around exposed electrical wires, junction boxes and areas with waterlogging. If there is any possibility of electricity leakage, the affected area should be immediately secured to prevent such incidents.

The university’s investigation report will determine whether the incident was caused only by a technical fault or whether any negligence in safety arrangements also contributed to the tragedy.
