Meenakshi Natarajan Rajya Sabha Nomination Rejected Amid Allegations of Document Leak and Political Conspiracy in Madhya Pradesh

The rejection of Meenakshi Natarajan’s Rajya Sabha nomination in Madhya Pradesh has triggered a political storm involving allegations of non-disclosure of a Telangana court case, claims of internal Congress sabotage, BJP’s legal strategy, and objections over procedural conduct during scrutiny, escalating tensions between major political parties.

The Madhya Pradesh Rajya Sabha election has taken a dramatic turn after the nomination paper of Congress candidate Meenakshi Natarajan was rejected by Returning Officer Arvind Sharma over alleged non-disclosure of a pending court case in Telangana, triggering a fierce political controversy involving allegations of internal party sabotage and cross-party coordination.

According to the order of scrutiny, objections were raised regarding the omission of details of a pending legal matter in Telangana, which ultimately led to the rejection of Natarajan’s nomination. The development immediately escalated into a political confrontation between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress.

The Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that the documents used to challenge the nomination may have originated from within the Congress organisation itself. Senior BJP leader and Madhya Pradesh Cabinet Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya suggested that the source of the papers indicated internal discord within the Congress, stating that the party was receiving sensitive documents from Telangana, where the Congress is in power, and implying possible internal involvement in the transfer of information.

Adding another layer to the controversy, opposition Bharat Rashtra Samithi also attributed the incident to internal factionalism within the Congress in Telangana. The party claimed that Meenakshi Natarajan, who served as Congress in-charge in Telangana, had previously opposed major initiatives of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, including the Musi River beautification project, the Khammam demolition initiative, and alleged deforestation activities linked to the University of Hyderabad expansion, thereby creating internal political friction.

However, according to information cited from BJP sources, the documents were not the result of an accidental leak but were transferred through a coordinated political channel. Telangana BJP President Ramchander Rao is reported to have provided the relevant legal documents to Madhya Pradesh BJP President Hemant Khandelwal. These documents, including details of court cases and legal notices, were sent to Bhopal on the previous Monday.

Following their receipt, Khandelwal is said to have briefed Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. The party subsequently formulated its legal strategy and assigned the responsibility of presenting objections before the Returning Officer to party leader Rahul Kothari and former High Court judge Rohit Arya. The involvement of a retired judge in the scrutiny proceedings has itself become a point of contention.

Congress leader and legal representative J. P. Dhanopia raised objections regarding the presence of the retired judge during the nomination scrutiny, questioning the authority under which he participated. He argued that the individual was neither a candidate, nor an authorised representative, nor formally part of the electoral process, and therefore his involvement raised procedural concerns.

The controversy is linked to a 2022 incident in Telangana in which a woman accused a Congress leader of harassment and threats. The complainant alleged that despite filing a complaint, no effective action was taken by the party leadership. She further stated that she had raised the matter with Meenakshi Natarajan during her tenure in the Congress organisation in Telangana.

The Congress, however, has firmly rejected the allegations, stating that Meenakshi Natarajan was not named in any First Information Report and that no criminal case was registered against her. The party maintained that there was no legal obligation to disclose the matter in the nomination affidavit, insisting that the rejection was based on misinterpretation of the disclosure requirements.

The unfolding developments have transformed the Rajya Sabha election process in Madhya Pradesh into a high-stakes political and legal confrontation, intensifying scrutiny over nomination procedures and inter-party dynamics.
