North India Scorches Under Intense Heatwave as IMD Predicts Rain, Thunderstorms and Hailstorm Relief from June 11

North India continues to face severe heatwave conditions, with Udhampur among the worst-affected areas. The IMD has forecast rising temperatures until June 11, followed by rainfall, thunderstorms, strong winds and isolated hailstorms across several northern states as a Western Disturbance brings a major weather shift.

Severe heatwave conditions continued to grip Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district on Tuesday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning that the intense spell is likely to persist until Wednesday. Udhampur remains among the worst-affected regions as large parts of North India battle unusually high temperatures.

According to the IMD, daytime temperatures across northern states are expected to rise by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius until June 11 before gradually declining by 3 to 5 degrees in the days that follow. The weather agency has issued heatwave alerts for isolated areas across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, western Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, with warnings remaining in force through June 11 in most locations.

Amid the prolonged heatwave, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to influence weather conditions across the Western Himalayan region beginning June 11, bringing the possibility of significant changes across large parts of North India.

The IMD has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between June 9 and June 14. Rainfall activity is also expected to extend to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan from June 10 to June 14, offering potential relief from the prevailing heat.

The weather transition is likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. The IMD has warned of thunder squalls with wind speeds ranging from 50 to 60 kilometres per hour, along with lightning and gusty conditions, particularly across Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh on June 11 and 12.

In addition, isolated hailstorms are likely over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand during the same period. Similar weather conditions may also affect parts of Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on June 12, raising concerns about sudden and severe weather activity.

Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant, follow official weather advisories and take necessary precautions, particularly in areas vulnerable to thunderstorms, hailstorms and abrupt weather changes.

While the anticipated rainfall and subsequent drop in temperatures are expected to provide much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave, the forecast of thunderstorms, strong winds and hailstorms underscores the need for continued caution across North India in the coming days.
