BYD Seal U DM-i Set to Debut in India as Brand’s First Plug-in Hybrid SUV
BYD India has unveiled the Seal U DM-i, its first plug-in hybrid SUV for the Indian market. Scheduled for launch before the end of 2026, the vehicle combines a turbocharged petrol engine, Blade battery technology, dual electric motors, and a claimed range of over 1,200 kilometres, bringing advanced hybrid mobility to a broader customer base.
At the heart of the Seal U DM-i is BYD’s advanced plug-in hybrid powertrain, a technology that has traditionally been associated with luxury and high-performance vehicles in India. The system combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged hybrid petrol engine, BYD’s 18.3 kWh Blade battery pack, and two electric motors. One electric motor functions as a generator, while the second serves as the traction motor responsible for driving the wheels. Unlike conventional hybrid systems, the battery can also be charged externally, allowing the vehicle to operate much like a fully electric car during everyday use.
According to BYD, the Seal U DM-i offers a combined driving range of more than 1,200 kilometres using both petrol and electric power. The battery and traction motor together provide up to 70 kilometres of pure electric driving on a full charge, enabling emission-free operation for daily urban commuting.
The vehicle automatically switches between different operating modes depending on driving conditions. At lower speeds and in congested city traffic, the SUV primarily runs in pure electric mode, drawing energy directly from the battery. In the system’s Series mode, the petrol engine does not power the wheels. Instead, it operates as a generator, producing electricity that is supplied to the traction motor. During situations requiring maximum performance, the petrol engine directly drives the wheels while simultaneously charging the battery.
The Seal U DM-i is positioned as a mid-size SUV, measuring 4.7 metres in length and featuring a wheelbase of 2,765 mm. The vehicle is designed to accommodate five occupants. While India-specific specifications have not yet been confirmed, the global model provides a clear indication of the equipment expected to be offered.
The cabin is centred around a rotatable infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Additional features include a panoramic sunroof, an air purification system, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, and Vehicle-to-Load functionality, which enables the battery to supply power directly to external devices.
The arrival of the Seal U DM-i is particularly significant because plug-in hybrid technology has largely remained limited to luxury and performance vehicles priced above Rs. 1.50 crore in India. BYD is expected to introduce this technology at a considerably more accessible price point, creating a new ownership proposition for consumers seeking the benefits of electric mobility without fully transitioning to a pure electric vehicle.
With its combination of extended driving range, electric-only capability, advanced hybrid technology, and premium features, the Seal U DM-i represents a major step in expanding alternative powertrain options for Indian buyers and could play a key role in bridging the gap between conventional internal combustion vehicles and fully electric mobility.
