Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary seventeenth-century warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire, was formally conferred the title of Chhatrapati in 1674. On June 6, 1674, his coronation took place at Raigad Fort, marking a defining moment in Indian history. He is widely remembered for his military strategy, effective governance, religious tolerance, and people-centric administrative model, and for establishing a sovereign Hindu state amid powerful regional adversaries.
India extended formal recognition to Israel in 1950, laying the foundation for a relationship that has significantly strengthened over the past three decades. Although formal diplomatic relations were established in 1992, cooperation between the two countries predates this period, built upon historical interactions and community linkages, particularly with the Bene Israel Jewish community of Maharashtra.

The decision to install a statue of Shivaji Maharaj in Israel is being viewed as an extension of this evolving partnership, adding a new cultural dimension to an already multi-faceted bilateral relationship.
The proposed installation is also being seen as a symbolic acknowledgment of shared historical connections and mutual respect between the two nations, reinforcing cultural diplomacy alongside strategic engagement.
